TRANSCRIPT

LONG TIME FRIEND AND FRIEND OF
THIS PROGRAM, AND MY OSCAR
EXPERT, JIM MORA.
HOW ARE YOU, COACH?
>> HELLO, RICH.
I'M DOING GOOD.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
>> I'M SO THRILLED TO HAVE YOU
ON THIS PROGRAM AND ESPECIALLY
IN THIS CAPACITY, JIM.
>> CAPACITY AS AN OSCAR GUY OR A
FORMER COACH?
>> NO --
>> OSCAR GUY, I KNOW.
>> BOTH.
>> MOVIE GUY.
>> LISTEN, JIM, I'M NOT TOOTING
MY OWN HORN.
I WOULD NEVER DO THAT WITH YOU.
BUT WE HAVE MANY OPTIONS TO GO
IN THIS TOWN FOR OSCAR EXPERTS
AND FOR MOVIE EXPERTS AND YOU,
SIR, ARE THE ONE -- YOU'RE OUR
GO TO GUY AND THERE'S NOBODY
ELSE IN MY MIND FOR THIS.
>> SOMETIMES -- I KNOW YOU'RE A
SMART GUY, RICH.
BUT I'VE GOT A QUESTION.
>> COME ON, JIM.
>> THIS IS HOLLYWOOD, MAN.
THIS IS L.A.
THIS IS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
THIS IS WHERE MOVIES WERE BORN
AND ARE MADE.
A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS TOWN
THAT COULD GIVE YOU THE STRAIGHT
SCOOP.
>> BUT, NOW, LET'S BURNISH YOUR
BONA FIDES FOR PEOPLE WHO MAY
NOT BELIEVE THIS.
YOU GREW UP ON THE FOX LOT,
CORRECT?
>> I GREW UP NEAR THE FOX LOT.
MY DAD WAS A FILM EDITOR AT 20th
CENTURY FOX.
AND FOR A LONG TIME.
AND THEN HE WAS THE SUPERVISING
FILM EDITOR FOR THE ART LINK
LETTER PEOPLE AND ONE SUMMER I
DID WORK AT FOX AS A GAFFER --
SOMETHING.
WE SET UP ALL THE --
>> YOU WON ONE FOR THE GAFFER,
RIGHT, JIM?
THAT'S WHAT YOU DID?
YOU'RE THE GAFFER.
WHO DID YOU SEE?
ANY CELEBRITIES, ANY MOVIE
STARS?
>> YEAH, I SAW THEM ALL.
I WORKED ON THE FILM "THERE'S NO
BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS."
WHAT WAS THE ONE WITH MARLON
BRANDO AND GENE SIMMONS, A GREAT
MOVIE.
I SAT UP THERE AND OPERATED A
LAMP, YOU KNOW, TWO OR THREE
LAMPS UP ON THE CAT WALK.
WATCHED THESE GUYS ACT.
IT WAS GREAT.
>> DID YOU GET TO MEET MARLON
BRANDO?
>> NO, BUT I WATCHED HIM
PERFORM.
>> "GUYS AND DOLLS?"
>> NO.
NO NO NO.
THE OTHER ONE.
IT WAS -- OH, MY GOSH, I CAN'T
REMEMBER.
JEAN SIMMONS, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL
WOMAN I EVER SEEN.
>> I THINK CHRIS LAW IS LOOKING
AT THE IMDB RECORD OF GENE
SIMMONS OF KISS RIGHT NOW.
HE'S TRYING TO -- THAT'S WHY HE
SAID --
>> NO, MARLON BRANDO PLAYED
NAPOLEON.
>> OKAY.
CHRIS LAW IS PUTTING THAT RIGHT
NOW INTO THE INTERNET WHICH IS A
BEAUTIFUL THING.
AND YOU COME UP WITH ANYTHING,
CHRIS LAW?
YOU GOT ANYTHING?
IN THE MEANTIME, WE'LL TALK
ABOUT THE CURRENT FILMS RIGHT
NOW, JIM, BECAUSE AGAIN, YOU'RE
GOING TO BE JOINING US NEXT
WEEK.
>> DESIREE.
>> DESIREE!
THAT'S IT.
>> FANTASTIC.
SO WE'RE SETTING THE STAGE HERE
IN A WAY, JIM, BECAUSE YOU'RE
GOING TO JOIN US AGAIN NEXT WEEK
WHICH IS OSCAR WEEK AND THEN
YOU'RE GOING TO JOIN US THE WEEK
AFTERWARDS TO SEE HOW IT WENT
DOWN IN THE TOWN OF TINSEL FOR
THE BIGGEST NIGHT IN MOVIES.
I SORT OF WANT TO HIT THE BEST
PICTURE NOMINEES WITH YOU RIGHT
HERE AND RIGHT NOW BECAUSE YOU
SEE ALL OF THESE MOVIES, MOST OF
THEM.
DID YOU SEE ALL OF THE BEST --
>> I HAVE SEEN EVERY ONE.
>> YOU HAVE SEEN THEM ALL,
"AMERICAN SNIPER," "BOYHOOD" OR
"THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL" OR DO
YOU CALL IT BUDAPEST?
>> BUDAPEST.
>> "IMITATION GAME", "SELMA" AND
"THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING" AND

"WHIPLASH."
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF "BIRDMAN?"
>> IT WAS THE LAST ONE I HAD
SEEN, ACTUALLY.
A LOT OF PEOPLE SOME LIKED IT,
SOME WALKED OUT, SOME LOVED IT.
AND I WAS KIND OF -- I DIDN'T
KNOW WHAT TO THINK OF IT.
I WENT AND SAW IT AND I LIKED
IT.
IT WASN'T IN THE TOP THREE OR
FOUR FOR ME.
BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS A REALLY
GOOD MOVIE AS WERE ALL OF THESE
MOVIES ON THE NOMINATIONS --
THAT HAVE BEEN NOMINATED THIS
YEAR.
THEY'RE ALL GOOD.
THERE WASN'T ONE THAT I DIDN'T
LIKE, THAT I DIDN'T WALK OUT.
>> WHO DID YOU THINK OF THE FILM
WORK IN "BIRDMAN" BECAUSE THERE
WERE SINGLE SHOTS THAT LASTED
TEN MINUTES IN THE FILM.
>> I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THAT.
THAT THOUGHT DIDN'T GO THROUGH
MY HEAD WHEN I WAS WATCHING IT.
IT WAS WEIRD, IT WAS DIFFERENT.
IT WAS WEIRD.
I LOVE MICHAEL KEATON.
I THOUGHT HE DID A GREAT JOB.
I JUST -- I DON'T KNOW.
YOU KNOW, BEING IN THE MOVIE
BUSINESS A LITTLE BIT MYSELF,
LIKING MOVIES HERE YOU'RE
TALKING ABOUT AN ACTOR.
A WASHED UP ACTOR TRYING TO
REVIVE HIS CAREER.
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FOR THE
UNDERDOG AND I WAS ROOTING FOR
IT.
>> ALL RIGHT.
JIM MORA, BREAKING DOWN THE
OSCAR FILMS.
WE ARE JUST BEGINNING TO TOUCH
UPON THE BIGGEST WEEK IN
HOLLYWOOD THAT'S COMING UP NEXT
WEEK.
THAT'S -- THIS IS THE ONLY SHOW
THAT IT GETS OVERSHADOWED BY THE
COMBINE.
BUT BE THAT AS IT MAY.
WE'VE GOT "THE IMITATION GAME"
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THAT WITH
BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH?
>> I LOVED IT.
THE BEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN.
I DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL GET --
THE GET OSCAR.
BUT I LOVED IT.
YOU KNOW WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT
AND ALSO "THE THEORY OF
EVERYTHING" AND "AMERICAN
SNIPER," THEY'RE ALL TRUE, THEY
WERE ALL BASED ON A TRUE STORY.
THAT'S WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT.
I THOUGHT IT WAS INTENSE, GREAT
ACTING.
I LOVE THE SUBJECT, YOU KNOW?
THE CODE AND HOW THEY DISCOVERED
IT AND WHAT IT MEANT WHEN THEY
DISCOVERED IT AND THE EFFECT IT
HAD ON THE WAR.
I THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT, GREAT
MOVIE.
>> DID YOU KNOW, JIM, THE
ORIGINAL NAME OF "THE IMITATION
GAME" WAS SPYGATE?
>> I DIDN'T KNOW THAT.
>> I'M LYING.
IT'S ABOUT ENIGMA.
>> I REALLY LIKED IT.
A GREAT MOVIE.
>> OKAY.
HOW ABOUT "THE THEORY OF
EVERYTHING" WOULD YOU CALL THAT
A LOVE STORY, JIM?
>> YOU KNOW, I HAVEN'T HEARD
ANYBODY SAY THAT.
BUT NOW THAT YOU MENTIONED IT, I
COULD SEE WHERE IT WOULD BE A
LOVE STORY.
THE FACT THAT --
>> OKAY.
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF "THE
THEORY OF EVERYTHING?"
>> I LIKED IT.
I THOUGHT EDDIE REDMAYNE DID A
GREAT JOB.
I MEAN, TO HAVE -- AND I READ
ABOUT PRIOR TO SEEING THE MOVIE
I HAD READ ABOUT THE PREPARATION
HE WENT THROUGH TO PLAY THAT
PART.
WHAT HE HAD TO DO AND THE PEOPLE
HAD TO BE AROUND, AND JUST HOW
HE PHYSICALLY -- HOW HE ACTED
OUT THE PART OF HAVING THAT
TERRIBLE DISEASE.
YOU KNOW, AGAIN, IT'S IN MY TOP
FOUR.
THAT'S FOR SURE.
>> SO WHAT'S A YOUR FAVORITE
MOVIE YOU SAW, PERIOD, END OF
STORY?
>> WELL, NOW, YOU HAVE -- HERE'S
THE ONE THAT REALLY EXCITED ME.
I'M NOT GOING TO SAY -- IT WAS
ONE OF THE FIRST ONE I SAW, "THE
GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL," SOME TIME
AGO.
BUT THEN I SEE THE MOVIE
"WHIPLASH."
I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS ABOUT.
AND I WENT AND I SAW IT AND I
THOUGHT IT WAS FABULOUS.
IT WAS SO INTENSE.
I WALKED OUT OF THERE AND THE
FIRST THING I SAID, WAS MAN WAS
THAT INTENSE.
AND I TALKED TO PEOPLE AFTER I
SAW IT, YOU KNOW, A WEEK OR SO,
TWO WEEKS.
AND THEY SAID WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN
LATELY?
I SAID, YOU HAVE TO GO SEE
"WHIPLASH."
WAIT A MINUTE, WHAT IT'S ABOUT?
WELL, IF I TOLD YOU IT WAS ABOUT
A DRUMMER -- A KID THAT PLAYED
THE DRUMS AND A GUY THAT COACHED
HIM, THAT DOESN'T SOUND TOO
EXCITING BUT IF YOU GO THERE,
YOU'RE GOING TO WALK OUT OF
THERE AND SAY, MAN, THAT WAS
INTENSE.
THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT THAT
MOVIE.
I LOVED I.
>> I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU.
I SAW "WHIPLASH" RECENTLY.
I SAW "THE IMITATION GAME" AND
TO ME, "WHIPLASH" IS THE BEST
MOVIE I HAVE SEEN THIS YEAR.
J.K. SIMMONS AS THE TEACHER TO
WHOM YOU REFER HE WON THE GOLDEN
GLOBE.
I THINK HE DESERVES THE OSCAR
FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR.
HE WAS SUPERB.
DO ANY NFL COACHES -- DID THAT
REMIND YOU OF ANY NFL COACHES?
>> NO.
IT REMINDED ME OF THE DRILL
INSTRUCTORS I HAD WHEN I WAS IN
THE MARINE CORPS.
[ LAUGHTER ]
>> OKAY.
SO THERE'S NO NFL COACHES THAT
ARE AS HARROWING AS THIS TEACHER
IN I GUESS THIS MOCK JUILLIARD
THAT THEY CREATED IN "WHIPLASH."
>> I DON'T THINK YOU CAN GET
AWAY WITH WHAT HE DID IN THE
MOVIE, NOT IN COLLEGE OR PROS.
HE WAS SOMETHING.
>> YEAH.
>> AND THE KID -- I CAN'T
BELIEVE THE KID THAT PLAYED --
COULD PLAY THE DRUMS LIKE THAT.
GOD, THAT FINAL SEASON WHERE
HE'S POUNDING AWAY ON THE DRUMS.
>> LET'S NOT DO ANYTHING --
SPOILER ALERT.
WE CAN'T -- LET'S NOT DO ANY
MORE OF THAT.
THE FIRST OF SEVERAL APPEARANCES
FOR YOU, SIR.
WE JUST TIPPED A TOE IN THE
OSCAR POOL HERE.
SO STAND BY FOR THE TV AUDIENCE.
I'M GOING TO HAVE ONE MORE
SEGMENT WITH YOU.
FOR THE RADIO AUDIENCE, I'LL SAY
I'LL LOOK FORWARD TO CHATTING
MORE WITH YOU NEXT WEEK.
