David Feherty of the Golf Channel on Jordan Spieth Win & Chambers Bay Course Conditions – 6/22/15

TRANSCRIPT

DAVID FEHERTY HERE ON THE CBS
MORNING SHOW, AND ALSO ON HIS
SHOW ON THE GOLF CHANNEL CAN,
AND SO WHERE DO YOU PLACE
SPIETH'S 2015 SEASON IN THE
PANTHEON?
>> WELL, SO FAR, SO GOOD.
WHEN HE WON AT THE MASTER, IT
WAS A PHENOMENAL PERFORMANCE AND
WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE CONDITIONS
THEY PLAYED THIS PAST WEEK, IT
IS AN INDICATION THAT JORDAN
SPIETH CAN WIN ANYTHING
ANYWHERE, AND HE IS THAT GOOD.
AND TO HAVE SUCH A WONDERFUL KID
BE IN THIS POSITION, AND HAVING
WON THE FIRST TWO MAJORS OF THE
YEAR, IT IS GOING TO PUT GOLF IN
A GREAT PLACE.
>> HOW MUCH BETTER CAN HE GET?
WHAT IS HE WORKING ON THAT
JORDAN NEEDS TO MAYBE POLISH UP
A LITTLE BIT MORE AS A
21-YEAR-OLD?
IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE TOO MUCH?
>> WELL, STRENGTH IS THAT HE
DOESN'T HAVE ANY WEAKNESSES,
UNLIKE MYSELF IS THAT MY
WEAKNESS IS THAT I DON'T HAVE
ANY STRENGTH.
AND HE IS REALLY WORKING ON RORY
McILROY, AND THAT IS THE GOAL TO
GET TO NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD.
RORY McILROY IS A DIFFERENT
PLAYER, AND JORDAN SPIETH, I
THINK LOOKS MORE WORKMAN-LIKE,
AND A KIND OF A TECHNICAL TO PUT
IT IN THE RIGHT PLACE AND LEAVE
IT ON THE HOLE KIND OF THING,
AND RORY HAS SOMETHING MUCH MORE
FREE FLOWING, AND IT IS GOING TO
BE FASCINATING TO SEE THEM
HEAD-TO-THE HEAD.
>> AND IT IS WHEN THEY ARE ON
THE COURSE TOGETHER THINKING
ABOUT THE OTHER ONE AND/OR
TRYING TO START A RIVALRY,
BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THEY ARE
THE NUMBERS ONE AND TWO IN THE
WORLD?
>> WELL, I THINK THAT IT IS
THINKING ABOUT EACH OTHER AT
THIS POINT, AND RORY WOULD LIKE
TO STAY IN FRONT, AND JORDAN
NEEDS TO GET THERE, BUT IT IS
MADE ALL OF THE MORE REMARKABLE
THAT IT IS SO DIFFICULT THESE
DAYS TO HAVE A RIVALRY, BECAUSE
THESE KIDS ARE SO GOOD AND SO
MANY OF THEM.
AND WE HAVE SEEN IT IN RECENT
YEARS, YOU KNOW, WINNING THE
MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, AND THEIR
NAMES ARE NAMES THAT THE PERHAPS
WE ARE NOT THAT FAMILIAR WITH
THEM.
BUT THAT IS THE WAY IT IS GOING
TO BE.
THEY ARE SO GOOD, AND SO MANY OF
THEM IN THE TOURNAMENTS, AND
ESPECIALLY THE MAJOR
CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE SO MUCH MORE
DIFFICULT TO WIN THAN THEY USED
TO BE.
>> AND DAVID FEHERTY ON THE
PHONE, AND NOW, LET'S GET INTO
THE CHAMBERS BAY, AND I WANTED
TO KNOW WHERE YOU STOOD ON THE
COURSE AND THE CONDITIONS, BUT I
GUESS I JUST LEARNED THAT, HUH?
>> WELL, I WILL THE TELL YOU
THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN I HAVE NOT
BEEN THERE, AND I HAD MY WIFE
CALL DIRECT TV WHEN I FIRST SAW
IT, BECAUSE I THOUGHT SOMETHING
WAS WRONG WITH THE PICTURE,
BECAUSE IT LOOKED POST
APOCALYPTIC TO ME AS IF A BOMB
HAD GONE BY NEARBY, AND NO
MATTER WHAT THE USGA SAID ABOUT
THE CONDITION OF THE COURSE, THE
GREENS WERE HORRIFIC AND NOT AT
THE STANDARD OF A U.S. OPEN.
I DON'T KNOW WHY, BECAUSE THERE
WAS ONE GREEN OUT THERE, AT
LEAST ONE RESURFACED AND LOOKED
LIKE ALL FESCUE, AND LOOKED VERY
GOOD.
I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY WOULDN'T
HAVE DONE ALL OF THEM LIKE THAT,
BECAUSE WHEN THE POE AN†-- POA
ANNUA GETS IN THERE, IT IS
PERPENDICULAR.
>> AND WHAT ABOUT THE DAMAGE IN
THERE, DAVID?
>> WELL, THE GOLF COURSE,
ITSELF, IT WAS VERY INTERESTING,
AND ALSO INTERESTING CHOICE OF
VENUE, BECAUSE WE HAVE HAD TWO
BRITISH OPENS THIS YEAR OR WILL
HAVE, AND THIS IS UNUSUAL GOLF
COURSE, AND HAVE NOT SEEN IT
WITH THE FESCUE OR THE
IMPOVERISHED SOIL, AND SO FIRM,
AND IT HAS BRITISH OPEN WRITTEN
ALL OVER IT.
>> AND THERE IS TALK OF MAYBE
GOING BACK TO CHAMBERS BAY AT
TEN YEARS FROM NOW, AND
OBVIOUSLY, A LOTS CAN HAPPEN
BETWEEN NOW AND THEN, AND,
BECAUSE IAN POULTER ALSO SAID,
THAT IF THIS IS A REGULAR
TOURNAMENT, THE PLAYERS WOULD
HAVE PROTESTED AND LEFT, AND
THEY CAN'T DO THAT FOR THE U.S.
OPEN.
IS THERE A FORM OF A PLAYER
UPRISING IF THE USGA DECIDED TO
GO BACK TO THE CHAMBERS BAY?
>> WELL, IT WOULD DEPEND ON THE
CONDITION OF THE GOLF COURSE,
AND IF THEY COULD GET THE GREEN
TO THE FESCUE OR ALL POA, AND
EVEN THE SURFACE, A LITTLE BIT,
BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT IT
IS THE SAME SURFACE FOR
EVERYBODY, BUT THAT HAVING SAID,
YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE GREAT
CONDITIONS IN THE MAJOR
CHAMPIONSHIP, AND AGAIN, YOU
KNOW, TO SEE JORDAN COME TO THE
TOP LIKE THAT AND TO STAY IN
CONTENTION ALL WEEK, AND GET HIS
NOSE IN FRONT, AND PEOPLE ARE
GOING TO SAY, IT IS HANDED TO
HIM BECAUSE DUSTIN 3-PUTTED AND
THAT IS NOT RIGHT, BECAUSE YOU
HANG UP A NUMBER, AND IF ANYBODY
CAN BEAT IT, FINE.
BUT IT WOULDN'T HAVE MATTERED IF
HE 3-PUTTED THE FIRST OR THE THE
LAST, IT IS JUST THE WAY GOLF
IS.
>> AND WHAT ABOUT THE CHANCES OF
JORDAN TO MAKE IT THREE?
>> WELL, A GREAT CHANCE AND RORY
HAS THE GREAT CHANCE TO BE IN
THERE AT THE FINISH.
AND ANDREWS IS A COURSE THAT YOU
CAN GET ON TOP OF IT IF YOU
DRIVE IT WELL, AND RORY McILROY
IS THE GREATEST DRIVER OF THE
GOLF BALL THAT HAS EVER LIVE AND
I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE
IT.
AND AGAIN, ANDREWS IS WIDE OPEN
UNTIL THEY PUT THE FLAGS AWAY,
AND THEN THERE IS A 25-YARD
STRIP ON EVERY HOLE THAT YOU
HAVE TO BE IN, IF YOU ARE GOING
TO BE CLOSE IT TO, AND THAT IS
JORDAN'S GAME DOWN TO THE TEE.
IT IS PERFECT FOR HIM AS WELL.
AND IT IS REALLY, THE
ANTICIPATION OF THE BRITISH OPEN
IS GOING TO BE E PHENOMENAL.
>> TV SPORTS GOLF ANALYST, DAVID
FEHERTY, AND ARE YOU SHOOTING
THE GOLF SHOW DOWN THERE IN
ALABAMA, DAVID?
>> WELL, NOT IN ALABAMA, I HAVE
NICK SABAN HERE, AND I'M
SOMEWHERE HERE IN GEORGIA, BUT
WATERFALL IS THE NAME OF THE
GOLF COURSE, AND IT IS
SPECTACULAR AND IF I CAN GO OUT
THERE ON THE PORCH, I CAN HEAR A
BANJO AND A PIG SQUEAK.
>> WOW, NICK SABAN AND HE IS
PROBABLY THE BURT REYNOLDS
CHARACTER IN "DELIVERANCE."
>> WELL, IT IS A BEAUTIFUL
PLACE.
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS.
>> NICK IS A PLAYER, DAVID?
>> LOVES THE PLAY.
LOVES TO PLAY.
>> AND THE GREENS THERE?
THE SURFACES?
>> SO PERFECT.
>> YES, AND THE PLAYERS WOULD
WISH THEY HAD THEM.
NOT CHAMBERS BAY FOR SURE.
>> AND BEFORE I LET YOU GO, THE
POLL QUESTION AT RICH EISEN
SHOW.COM.
>> WHO IS GOING TO FINISH THE
CAREER WITH MORE MAJOR
CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORIES, SPIETH,
McILROY OR TIGER WOODS?
>> TIGER WOODS.
YOU KNOW, PEOPLE HAVE FORGOTTEN,
CHRIS, WHAT TIGER WOODS DID.
I WAS THERE FOR THAT TEN OR
11-YEAR STRETCH FROM 1997 TO THE
2008, AND WHEN HE PLAYED WELL,
NOBODY ELSE WON.
I'M†-- NO PLAYER I HAVE EVER
SEEN IS CAPABLE OF WHAT HE DID.
MY CHILDREN WON'T SEE IT, AND
THEIR CHILDREN WON'T SEE IT, AND
TO GET TO 14 IS ASTONISHING.
>> THANK YOU, DAVID.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME.
