Curtis Strange of ESPN Talks Jordan Spieth Win & Tiger Woods’ Struggle – 6/22/15

TRANSCRIPT

CURTIS STRANGE HAS CALLED
IN AND I AM PLEASED TO BE JOINED
BY A MEMBER OF THE GOLF HALL OF
FAME, AND TWO-TIME U.S. OPEN
CHAMPION, AND HOW ARE YOU?
>> VERY GOOD, RICH.
HOW ARE YOU?
>> TOO THE LONG.
I HAVE BEEN CATCHING UP WITH
SOME OF MY GOLFING FRIEND, AND I
WILL OPEN IT UP FOR YOU, AND
WHEN DUSTIN JOHNSON IS STAND
THING OVER THAT EAGLE PUTT, WHAT
WERE YOU THINKING?
>> BE CAREFUL, AND IT HAS TO B
AND YOU KNOW, IT IS TOUGH TO SEE
IN THE TWO DIMENSIONAL TV HOW
STEEP THAT SLOPE WAS, BUT WHEN
THEY GOT THE CAMERA FROM THE
HOLE SIDE OF HIM YOU COULD SEE
THAT THIS WAS HARD LEFT TO THE
RIGHT AND VERY QUICK AND VERY
BUMPY, AND WE HAVE ALL TALKED
WAY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE GREENS.
THE ONE LAST THOUGHT THAT HE
MIGHT HAVE HAD, AND HE MIGHT
HAVE HAD IT, BUT IF THIS FALLS
IN, IT MIGHT BE DRUNK, AND IF IT
FALLS IN, WE WILL HAVE A
PLAYOFF, AND WITH THE LENGTH, IT
SHOULD GO IN, BUT IT DIDN'T GO
IN, AND AS WE HAVE SEEN ALL WEEK
LONG, IF YOU RUN IT BY, IT JUST
DIDN'T.
AND SO ALL WEEK LONG WE SAW IT
DIDN'T COME BACK.
>> AND I WANT YOU TO RUN BACK
THE HOOD OF IT, AND WHAT IS IT
LIKE TO STAND OVER A GIMME TO
DEFEND A PLAYOFF ON THE U.S.
OPEN, AND WHAT IS CLANKING
AROUND BETWEEN DUSTIN JOHNSON'S
TEMPLES?
>> WELL, HE IS CERTAINLY NOT
THINKING THAT IT IS A GIMME, AND
HE HAD WHAT, 3 FEET?
3 1/2 FEET?
WELL, YOU KNOW, THE GREENS ARE
NOT SMOOTH.
IT IS, IT'S THE STAGE UNLIKE
ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN EVER
IMAGINE, AND IT IS THE GRANDEST
STAGE OTHER THAN THE BRITISH
OPEN THAT WE CAN BE ON.
HE'S WORKED HIS BUTT OFF FOR 71
HOLES, AND LET'S NOT THROWUP ON
OURSELVES NOW.
ALL OF THE ABOVE, BUT THE ONE
THING THAT HE HAD TO TO KEEP
THINKING TO HIMSELF IS JUST GET
IT DONE.
I HAVE GOT TO WORK HARD FOR ONE
MORE SHOT.
I HAVE GOT TO DO EVERYTHING IN
MY POWER TO PUT A GOOD STROKE ON
IT, AND HE DIDN'T.
AND WE ARE NOT ANY DIFFERENT
THAN THE 15 HANDICAPPER FOR $2
ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON, AND WE
THINK THE ABSURDLY NEGATIVE
THOUGHTS A LOT OF TIMES, BUT
THAT IS THE CASE WHERE, YOU
KNOW, YOU COULD NOT LET IT CREEP
IN, AND YOU HAD TO KIND OF BE A
MAN, AND NOT THAT HE IS NOT, BUT
I MEAN, I HAVE SAID TO MYSELF,
OKAY, YOU NO-GOOD, YOU KNOW,
BLANKETY-BLANK, AND PUMP
YOURSELF UP TO KEEP AT HAND WHAT
IS IN FRONT OF YOU.
>> AND WE HAVE NOT SPOKEN ABOUT
IT ON THE PROGRAM, AND I MIGHT
AS CHAT ABOUT IT WITH CURTIS
STRANGE, AND THE MENTAL ASPECT
THAT USED TO BE TIGER'S
STRENGTH, AND HE WAS ABSOLUTELY
TAKEN OUT BY THE COURSE AND THE
CIRCUMSTANCES AND EVERYTHING
THAT IS GOING ON WITH HIM, AND
WHAT IS GOING ON WITH TIGER, AS
I AM SURE YOU WILL SEE HIM AT
THE OLD COURSE IN A COUPLE OF
WEEKS?
>> WELL, IT STARTS WITH NOT
HITTING THE BALL WELL, AND
QUESTIONING THE ABILITY TO HIT
THE BALL LIKE YOU KNOW THAT YOU
USED TO THE AND WHEN YOU DON'T
FOR A WHILE, YOU LOSE YOUR
CONFIDENCE, AND THAT IS WHERE
THE CONFIDENCE COMES IN, AND NOW
YOU DON'T HIT IT AT THE OLD
LOCATION, AND NOW YOU DON'T HAVE
YOUR CONFIDENCE AND YOU CAN'T
TAKE IT TO PLAY THE ORDINARY
GOLF, AND THEN WHEN HE STARTS TO
DRIVE IT ALL OVER THE LOT, THEN,
IT JUST, IT IS JUST A
SNOWBALLING EFFECT.
WE HAVE SEEN IT HAPPEN, BUT WE
HAVE ONLY SEEN IT HAPPEN A
COUPLE OF TIMES IS SOMEBODY COME
BACK, AND HE IS A STRONG GUY,
AND HE IS STILL TIGER WOODS, AND
I CAN NEVER WRITE HIM OFF,
BECAUSE HE IS STILL TIGER WOODS,
BUT THE TOUGHEST PART FOR HIM TO
COME BACK TO DO WELL AGAIN IS
THE MENTAL ASPECT OF IT, AND AND
IT TAKES IT A WHILE.
>> AND THERE A 21-YEAR-OLD WHO
SEEMS TO HAVE IT FIGURED OUT.
>> AND LOOK AT JORDAN SPIETH
GOING ABOUT IT, AND IT IS
LOOKING EASY, AND HE FLOWS, AND
WALKS ON AIR, AND NOW DON'T YOU
THINK THAT HE DIDN'T GET NERVOUS
AT THE END, AND HE WAS JUMPING
AROUND LIKE A CHICKEN WITH HIS
HEAD CUT OFF, AND EVERYTHING IS
LOOKING EASY AND FLOWING AND
GOING HIS WAY, AND THEN YOU LOOK
AT THE SAME TIME, AND LOOK AT
TIGER, AND IT IS ALL A STRUGGLE,
AND IT IS THE SIMPLEST SHOTS
THAT ARE A STRUGGLE NOW.
>> AND SPIETH'S CHANCES OF GOING
3 FOR 3 WITH YOU AND ME IN THE
TOWER THERE AT THE TOWER THERE,
CURTIS?
>> WELL, I WILL TELL YOU THAT I
WAS NOT ROUTING FOR OR AGAINST
ANYONE YESTERDAY.
ANY OF THE TOP THREER FOUR GUYS
WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT OPEN
CHAMPION, BUT WITH SPIETH
WINNING, IT MAKES THE OPEN
CHAMPIONSHIP A LITTLE BIT MORE
EXCITING AT ESPN SINCE WE HAVE
IT, AND IT IS GOING TO BE A BIG
WEEK, AND THEN IF YOU PUT ON TOP
OF IT, ST. ANDREWS, AND THE WAY
HE PUTTS, HE COULD EASILY GET IT
DONE, IF HE CAN HANDLE THE
PRESSURE, AND SO FAR, IT LOOKS
LIKE HE CAN DO IT.
AND WHEN DID THE 21-YEAR-OLDS
BECOME SO DOGGONED MATURE, AND
POISED UNDER THE PRESSURE?
I CERTAINLY WAS NOT LIKE THAT,
AND I DON'T THINK THAT YOU WERE
EITHER.
>> NO, I AM WITH YOU, CURTIS.
IT IS REMARKABLE AND MAYBE A
MARK OF TIGER'S LEGACY IN A WAY
TO SHOW THAT IT'S FEASIBLE FOR
THOSE TO DO IT, ALTHOUGH HOW
RARE IT IS TO SEE.
SPIETH'S NAME IS BEING MENTION
ED IN STATS WITH GUYS LIKE JACK,
ARNOLD PALMER, AND BEN HOGAN, I
MEAN, GENE SARAZEN, AND THESE
ARE ALL-TIMERS, CURTIS.
>> AND WE WILL SEE, AND I MEAN,
DON'T ANOINT HIM QUITE YET, AND
GIVE HIM SOME TIME, AND I THINK
THAT MY COMMENT AFTER HE WON THE
MASTERS, HE HAS WON THE FIRST
MAJOR AT 21, AND SEE HOW HE
HANDLES THE SPOTLIGHT.
WELL, HE WON THE VERY NEXT MAJOR
AND SO HE HAS DONE A VERY GOOD
JOB OF THAT, AND SEE HOW HE
HANDLES A BIGGER SPOTLIGHT.
I THINK THAT HE IS GOING TO DO
WELL, AND WILL HE DOMINATE LIKE
TIGER?
I DON'T THINK SO.
I MEAN, TO DOMINATE LIKE TIGER
DID, AND NOT ONLY DO YOU HAVE TO
BE A TALENT, BUT YOU HAVE TO
HAVE SOMETHING STANDS OUT, AND
IN THE DAY, TIGER HAD TWO
THINGS, THE MENTAL FOCUS, AND
THE LENGTH AT THE TIME.
HE HAD THE LENGTH, AND HE WAS
LONGER THAN ANYBODY ELSE.
AND FOR JORDAN TO DOMINATE LIKE
THAT, HE'S GOING TO HAVE TO BE
VERY STRAIGHT AN CONSISTENT AND
HITTING ON ALL CYLINDERS EVERY
SINGLE DAY.
>> AND CURTIS STRANGE†-- CURTIS
STRANGE, THE TWO-TIME U.S. OPEN
CHAMPION AND ESPN GOLF ANALYST.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS GOING ON IN
THE OFFICES THIS MORNING?
>> WELL, I KNOW WHAT I KNOW, BUT
I WISH THAT THERE WOULD BE A,
YOU KNOW, DISSECTING OF WHAT WE
WENT THROUGH FOR THE LAST FOUR
DAY, AND GOING TO THE GOLF
COURSE†-- I DON'T MIND GOING TO
THE GOLF COURSE THAT IS NOT SO
TRADITIONAL AS A WINGED FOOT OR
OAKMONT OR WHATEVER, AND I LIKE
TO GO TO THE STEP OUT OF THE BOX
AND GO TO A MODERN PROPERTY, BUT
WHAT I DID NOT WARM UP TO WAS
THAT IT WAS OVER TO THE TOP, THE
SLOPES OVER THE TOP, AND
EVERYBODY SAID, RICH, AND I'M
SURE THAT YOU HAVE PLAYED OVER
THERE AT THE LINKS GOLF COURSES,
AND THEY ARE FLAT, AND THEY HAVE
THE BUMPS AND THE BRUISES, BUS
THEY ARE PLAYED IN SAND DUNES
AND ALL OF THE GREENS HAVE THE
BUMPS AND THE BRUISES, BUT THEY
ARE FLAT IN GENERAL, AND THIS IS
ANYTHING BUT FLAT.
AND I THOUGHT WHEN I SAW THE
BALLS RUNNING ACROSS FAIRWAYS,
AND THEY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN HIT
ANY BETTER RUNNING INTO THE
ROUGH AND PUTTS GOING 15 FEET UP
AND DOWN, AND I APPLAUD THE GUYS
FOR USING THE IMAGINATION, AND
THAT IS WHERE THE USGA WILL SAY,
HEY, WE HAVE TO BE USING THE
IMAGINATIONS A LITTLE BIT
DIFFERENT, BUT I THOUGHT THAT IT
WAS A LITTLE BIT GOOFY, AND A
LITTLE BIT GOOFY.
>> YEAH, BUT EIGHT PLAYERS
FINISHED UNDER PAR, AND WHICH
OTHER THAN THE CONGRESSIONAL WAS
THE MOST SINCE OAKMONT, AND THE
PLAYERS WERE SCORING WHEN IT WAS
ALL SAID AND DONE, AND ONE OF
THE MOST OUTSPOKEN OF THE
GREENS, BILLY OR SHELL SHOT 3
UNDER, AND WHERE SHOULD SOMEBODY
LIKE ME WHO IS A FAN HEARING THE
PLAYERS BEING OPENLY CRITICAL
AND, I SEE WITH THE COURSE AND
THE GREEN, AND WHERE SHOULD I
STAND ON THIS SUBJECT, CURTIS?
>> WELL, BOTH SIDES OF THE
ARGUMENT HAVE A GOOD ARGUMENT,
BUT IS IT ALL ABOUT PAR?
ABOUT PLAYING THE GAME THE WAY
THAT, YOU KNOW, WE EXPECT TO BE
PLAYED FROM THE POWS OVER THE
GAME, THE USGA.
I DON'T CAN MIND IT LEAVING THE
TRADITIONAL COURSES, BUT I WISH
IT WOULD BE A BIT MORE FAIR.
IT LOOKED LIKE A LOT OF UNLUCKY
BOUNCES, AND LITTLE BIT UNFAIR
THIS THE PAST WEEK.
IT IS JUST MY OWN OPINION.
IT DOES NOT HAVE TO HIT AND STOP
WHERE IT HITS THE GROUND, NO NOT
ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION,
BUT I JUST THINK THAT WHEN THESE
GUYS ARE REALLY DAMN GOOD, AND
WHEN THEY CAN'T CONTROL THE BALL
ONCE IT HITS THE GROUND
COMPLETELY, AND NOT THAT IT IS
SUPPOSED TO BE CONTROLLED
COMPLETELY, BUT WHEN THEY DON'T
KNOW WHERE IT IS GOING TO STOP,
I HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF THE
PROBLEM WITH THAT, AND WHY THE
SCORE IS SO LOW, I DON'T KNOW,
AND WE COULD PROBABLY TALK AND
IT ALL DAY, BECAUSE THE ROUGH
WAS NOT AS BAD ORDINARILY IT IS,
AND THE COURSE PLAYED SHORT,
BECAUSE IT RAN OUT SO MUCH.
I DON'T KNOW.
IT IS THE WAY THAT THE GAME HAS
PLAYED OUT THROUGHOUT THE YEARS.
>> CURTIS, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR
CALLING IN, AND I WOULD LOVE TO
CHAT WITH YOU BEFORE THE OPEN IF
WE CAN.
AND THAT IS CURTIS STRANGE, FROM
THE WORLD WIDE LEADER OF SPORTS.
