Falcons QB Matt Ryan Talks 2015 NFL Offseason

TRANSCRIPT

JOINING ME HERE ON "THE RICH
EISEN SHOW," BACK ON THE
PROGRAM, THE QUARTERBACK OF THE
ATLANTA FALCONS, MATT RYAN.
HOW ARE YOU?
>> I'M DOING GREAT.
HOW ARE YOU?
>> I'LL ASK YOU WHAT WE HAVE
BEEN ASKING YOU EVERYBODY HERE.
WHAT'S THE BEST SPORTING MOMENT
YOU WITNESS AS A SPECTATOR?
>> AS A SPECTATOR?
>> YEAH.
THAT YOU'VE BEEN TO YOUR WHOLE
LIFE.
I KNOW I'M PUTTING YOU ON THE
SPOT.
>> I WISH HAD TIME TO THINK
ABOUT IT.
>> I'M ON WITH MUCC AND I TAP
DANCE AND I'M VAMPING AND THAT'S
WHAT I DO IN MY BUSINESS.
>> ALL RIGHT.
I WASN'T AT THE EVENT.
I WASN'T AT THE EVENT BUT I'M
SAYING WATCHING ON TV --
>> I'LL GO WITH THAT.
>> SINCE WE'RE MASTERS WEEK, I
THINK IT WAS 2005 WHEN TIGER
CHIPPED IN ON 16.
>> YEP.
>> VERSUS CHRIS DeMARCO.
I THINK THAT WAS THE MOST
EXCITING -- LIKE THAT WAS THE
MOST EXCITING BACK NINE/THAT
SHOT.
THAT WAS PROBABLY MY MOST
EXCITED MOMENT WATCHING A
SPORTING EVENT.
>> THE THING THAT MADE IT SO
GOOD FOR ME, FOR TIGER WOODS,
YOU KNOW A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE
WHO KNOWS ABOUT BRANDING AND
MARKETING AND THINGS OF THAT
NATURE, TIGER'S SO GOOD --
>> I'M A NIKE GUY MYSELF.
>> YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING
ABOUT.
HE'S SO GOOD THAT HE MADE SURE
THAT THE NIKE LOGO WAS SITTING
RIGHT THERE AS THE CUP WAS ON
THE LIP AND THEN IT ROLLED INTO
THE CUP.
I MEAN, WHAT MORE COULD HE DO?
>> I'M SURE PHIL KNIGHTON AND
EVERYBODY AT NIKE WERE EXTREMELY
PLEASED BY THAT.
>> THERE'S HOW GOOD TIGER IS.
>> HE KNEW HE COULD GET IT TO
STOP.
>> MATT RYAN, FALCONS
QUARTERBACK, JOINING ME HERE ON
"THE RICH EISEN SHOW."
SO WHAT IS IT LIKE RIGHT NOW,
DAN QUINN IN THE BUILDING, I
KNOW YOU CAN'T GET OUT ON THE
FIELD, DUE TO RULES.
BUT WHAT ARE THE THINGS LIKE
THERE IN ATLANTA?
>> YOU KNOW, IT'S BEEN AWESOME.
GETTING TO KNOW DAN THE LAST
COUPLE OF MONTHS, AND JUST, YOU
KNOW, SPENDING SOME TIME WITH
HIM THIS WEEK.
AND SEEING HIM INTERACT WITH ALL
THE GUYS AND JUST HIS PRESENCE.
IT'S BEEN -- IT'S BEEN AWESOME.
AND I THINK GUYS HAVE RESPONDED
REALLY WELL.
JUST IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.
AND I THINK EVERYBODY IS KIND OF
CHOMPING AT THE BIT NOW, YOU
KNOW, EVERYBODY WAS EXCITED FOR
THE MEETINGS AND ALL THAT KIND
OF STUFF TO START.
I THINK EVERYBODY IS EXCITED
NOW.
I THINK WE'VE GOT A MINICAMP
COMING UP HERE IN LIKE TWO WEEKS
OR A LITTLE OVER TWO WEEKS.
I THINK THAT'S KIND OF THE NEXT
STEP.
I THINK EVERYBODY IS FIRED UP TO
GET ON THE FIELD AND TO START
WORKING TOWARDS WHAT WE'LL BE
NEXT YEAR.
MY INITIAL IMPRESSION OF DAN HAS
BEEN REALLY POSITIVE.
I MEAN, HE IS -- HE IS WHAT YOU
SEE IS WHAT YOU GET.
HE'S A FOOTBALL GUY.
HE'S FUN TO BE AROUND.
I THINK HE'S A GREAT MOTIVATOR.
>> MIKE SMITH IS THE ONLY HEAD
COACH YOU HAVE KNOWN AS A
PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER,
MATT.
YOU KNOW, I'M GOING TO ASK YOU
WHAT THINGS ARE DIFFERENT, AND
NOW, ASKING QUESTIONS OF THAT
IT'S VERY -- IT'S DIFFICULT TO
MAKE IT NOT SOUND LIKE, WELL,
DAN IS X, Y AND Z AND THAT'S
WHAT MIKE SMITH WAS NOT.
>> RIGHT.
>> SO I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU THAT
CAVEAT AS I ASK, HOW ARE THINGS
THOUGH DICHTZ -- DIFFERENT WITH
DAN QUINN RIGHT NOW IN ATLANTA?
>> I THINK THEIR PERSONALITIES
ARE JUST DIFFERENT.
I THINK THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS
THAT, YOU KNOW, IT'S -- AND IT'S
NOT THEY'RE BETTER OR THEY'RE
WORSE.
I THINK THERE'S OBVIOUSLY A LOT
OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO GET IT
DONE.
AND A LOT OF DIFFERENT COACHING
STYLES HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN
THE NFL.
WHAT DAN IS IS, YOU KNOW, HIGH
ENERGY.
YOU KNOW, VERY, VERY POSITIVE.
VERY -- VERY, YOU KNOW,
SPECIFIC.
I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S THE RIGHT
WAY TO DESCRIBE IT, BUT VERY ON
POINT AND HIS MESSAGING IS
SUCCINCT AND IT'S VERY TO THE
POINT AND IT'S VERY CLEAR.
AND I THINK GUYS KIND OF GET IN
TO THAT AND UNDERSTAND WHERE
HE'S COMING FROM.
AND JUST -- YOU KNOW, FOR ME AS
A VETERAN HAVING PLAYED FOR A
LONG TIME UNDER MIKE, I MEAN,
FOR ME THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCES
ARE LIKE SCHEDULE.
YOU KNOW, YOU GET IN HERE AND
YOU'RE USED TO THINGS BEING A
CERTAIN WAY AND WITH DAN COMING
IN, THE TIMING YOU'RE GETTING IN
IS DIFFERENT.
THE MEETING LENGTHS ARE
DIFFERENT.
ALL THAT IS DIFFERENT.
THAT'S PROBABLY THE THING I HAVE
HAD TO ADJUST TO THE MOST.
>> IF I TOLD YOU YOU'RE 5-1 IN
THE NFC SOUTH, WHAT WOULD YOU
HAVE THOUGHT?
>> I WOULDN'T HAVE BELIEVED YOU.
YOU KNOW, I THINK IF YOU THINK
YOU CAN HANDLE YOUR BUSINESS AND
BE 5-1, JUST ONE WIN GAME
OUTSIDE OF THAT, YOU'D BE
DISAPPOINTED.
YOU KNOW?
SO OBVIOUSLY, WE WERE
DISAPPOINTED WITH HOW LAST
SEASON WENT.
YOU KNOW, BUT THERE'S A LOT OF
REASONS FOR THAT AND YOU HAVE TO
LEARN FROM THEM AND TRY TO BE
BETTER AS WE MOVE FORWARD.
BUT, YOU KNOW, I WOULDN'T HAVE
BELIEVED YOU IF YOU TOLD ME
THAT.
>> OBVIOUSLY YOU CAN'T GET OUT
ON THE FIELD YET IN ATLANTA OR
ANYWHERE IN THE NFL.
BUT WITH KYLE SHANAHAN, THE NEW
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, HOW
DIFFERENT DO YOU THINK THIS
OFFENSE WILL LOOK AND IF SO,
HOW?
>> I THINK EVERY -- YOU KNOW,
EVERY SCHEME IS A LITTLE BIT
DIFFERENT.
AND OBVIOUSLY, KYLE HAS HAD A
LOT OF SUCCESS, YOU KNOW, WITH
HIS STINT IN HOUSTON AND THEN
ALSO, YOU KNOW, WITH THEIR --
SOME OF THEIR TIME DURING THEIR
RUN IN WASHINGTON AND, YOU KNOW,
SO I THINK FROM A SCHEMATIC
STANDPOINT, YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE
RUN GAMES OBVIOUSLY DIFFERENT
FROM WHAT WE HAVE DONE IN THE
PAST.
A LOT MORE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE
ZONE, YOU KNOW, WHICH IS A LOT
DIFFERENT FROM WHAT WE HAVE
DONE.
IN THE PAST GAME I THINK THERE'S
A LOT MORE PLAY ACTION.
A LOT MORE OUTSIDE POCKET
MOVEMENT IN TERMS OF KEEPERS AND
I THINK ONE OF THE AREAS WHERE
IT WILL BE A GOOD MIX I FEEL
LIKE I HAVE GOT A GOOD -- REALLY
GOOD EXPERIENCE AND REALLY GOOD
COMFORT LEVEL IN SOME OF THE
DROP-BACK STUFF WHICH IS A
SMALLER PART OF WHAT THEY HAVE
DONE IN THE LAST COUPLE OF
YEARS.
>> MATT RYAN, FALCONS
QUARTERBACK JOINING ME RIGHT
HERE.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO WINSTON
AND MARIOTA AS THEY'RE TWO WEEKS
REMOVED FROM BEING DRAFTED INTO
THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE,
BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCE?
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THE TWO
KIDS?
>> I WOULD SAY ENJOY IT.
I THINK THE BIGGEST THING, YOU
KNOW, YOU'RE TWO WEEKS OUT NOW.
MOST -- THE MAJORITY OF YOUR
WORK IS DONE.
YOU KNOW, AT THIS POINT.
AND, YOU KNOW, YOU PROBABLY HAVE
ANOTHER WORKOUT OR TWO.
I HAVE SEEN THOSE GUYS HAVE
WORKOUTS COMING UP.
BUT, YOU KNOW, AT THE END OF THE
DAY, WHEN YOU GET ABOUT A WEEK
OUT, MOST OF THAT STUFF DIES
DOWN AND THEN IT'S -- YOU KNOW,
YOU JUST GOT TO ENJOY IT BECAUSE
IT ONLY COMES AROUND ONE TIME.
AND IT CAN BE STRESSFUL.
YOU KNOW, I CAN -- I CAN, YOU
KNOW, I KNOW THAT THEY'RE LITTLE
BIT NERVOUS ABOUT HOW THINGS
WILL SHAKE OUT.
BUT IF YOU CAN SIT BACK AND
RELAX AND ENJOY IT AND KIND OF
SOAK IT ALL UP AND TAKE IT ALL
IN, THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO GO
ABOUT IT.
THEY'LL KNOW WHERE THEY'LL BE
HERE IN TWO WEEKS AND THEY'VE
GOT A LOT OF HARD WORK IN FRONT
OF THEM AFTER THEY FIND OUT
WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO BE.
SO IT MIGHT BE A NICE CHANCE FOR
THEM TO CHILL OUT FOR A WEEK OR
TWO AND RELAX AND ENJOY THE
EXPERIENCE.
>> YOU'D TELL JAMEIS, DON'T
WORRY ABOUT IN THE NFL, NO ONE
IS GOING TO WAVE A BROOM AT YOU,
RIGHT?
>> DURING THE WORKOUTS, YEAH.
THE BROOM WOULD BE PREFERABLE.
I THINK THOSE BIG GUYS CHASING
YOU ARE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.
>> WATT DOESN'T HAVE A BROOM.
>> IT FEELS LIKE IT THOUGH, I'LL
TELL YOU WHAT, WHEN HE STICKS
THOSE ARMS UP AND YOU HAVE TO
FIND THROWING -- IT'S LIKE HE
HAS A GLOVE AND A BROOM KNOCKING
THINGS DOWN HERE.
>> WHO'S THE HARDEST HITTER?
WHAT'S THE HARDEST YOU HAVE BEEN
HIT?
>> I THINK THE HARDEST I WAS
HIT, I TOOK A GOOD ONE THIS
YEAR.
JASON WORILDS GOT ME FROM
PITTSBURGH THIS YEAR.
THAT ONE HURT.
I THINK THE HARDEST I WAS HIT,
MY ROOKIE YEAR, JULIUS PEPPERS
GOT ME ACROSS THE CHIN, ON MY
RIGHT SIDE AND THAT ONE KIND OF
LEFT A MARK.
>> DO YOU HAVE A MASTERS PICK,
MATT?
>> I LIKE JASON DAY.
I THINK -- I THINK HE TEES
AROUND 2:00 THIS AFTERNOON.
BUT HE'S BEEN -- HE'S BEEN
CONSISTENT OVER AT AUGUSTA AND
HE'S BEEN PLAYING WELL THIS
YEAR.
SO I LIKE JASON DAY.
>> WHAT DOES YOUR GOLF GAME LOOK
LIKE?
WHAT HAVE YOU GOT?
>> INCONSISTENT.
I WISH IT WAS BETTER.
I WISH I WAS A BETTER PLAY.
BUT I LIKE GETTING OUT THERE.
I LIKE PLAYING AS MUCH AS I CAN.
AND, YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY ONE DAY
I'LL BE A BETTER PLAYER.
>> I KNOW YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO
TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB WITH
AUGUSTA BEING THE FIGHT CLUB.
HAVE YOU PLAYED AUGUSTA
NATIONAL?
HAVE YOU --
>> YEAH.
I ACTUALLY HAVE.
I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO
BE OVER THERE A COUPLE OF TIMES.
>> WHAT'D YOU SHOOT?
>> WELL, SOME ROUNDS HAVE BEEN
GOOD.
SOME ROUNDS HAVE NOT BEEN SO
GOOD.
>> COME ON NOW.
>> I THINK I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO
PLAY OVER THERE WITH MY DAD AND
GO -- AND THE LAST TIME I WAS
THERE, I THINK I SHOT 75 WHICH
WAS A -- WHICH WAS A REALLY,
REALLY SPECIAL DAY FOR ME.
FOR ME AND MY DAD.
>> THAT'S FANTASTIC.
THAT'S INCREDIBLE.
>> YOU KNOW, THE TEES ARE A
LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN THE
ONES THEY'RE PLAYING THIS
WEEKEND.
SO I THINK THAT MAKES A BIG
DIFFERENCE.
>> WHEN THEY SAY THEY'VE
RYANIZED THE COURSE --
>> I DON'T THINK THEY'RE WORRIED
ABOUT ME.
>> HEY, MATT, THANKS FOR
CHECKING IN.
BY THE WAY, ARE YOU A "GAME OF
THRONES" GUY OR NOT?
>> I AM.
I'M READY FOR THE NEW SEASON TO
START.
>> I HAVE JON SNOW CALLING IN.
>> THERE YOU GO.
I THINK HE'S STUCK UP NORTH.
>> WHEREVER HE IS, HE'S WITH A
REDHEAD.
I KNOW THAT.
SO WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER
FROM "GAME OF THRONES"?
>> I LIKE ARIA.
I THINK SHE'LL PLAY A BIG ROLE.
>> YEAH.
THERE YOU GO.
