Mary Kay Cabot Talks Johnny Manziel on The RES – 2/2/15

TRANSCRIPT

MARY KAY CABOT WHO COVERS THE
CLEVELAND BROWNS JOINS ME NOW ON
"THE RICH EISEN SHOW."
MARY KAY, WHEN YOU HEARD THE
NEWS, YOU THOUGHT WHAT?
>> YOU KNOW WHAT, I WAS ACTUALLY
A LITTLE BIT SURPRISED BECAUSE I
STILL FELT THAT JOHNNY WAS
FIRMLY IN DENIAL AND THEN WHEN
WE TALKED TO HIM JUST AS HE WAS
ABOUT TO LEAVE AT THE END OF THE
SEASON HE STILL SEEMED LIKE HE
DIDN'T QUITE GET IT.
I MEAN, HE LEFT THAT DAY AND
BOLTED FOR SOUTH BEACH.
AND HE WAS SEEN PARTYING DOWN
THERE.
AND IN HOUSTON.
AND ASPEN WITH JOSH GORDON.
I THOUGHT YOU KNOW WHAT, THIS IS
NOT THE WAY TO START YOUR OFF
SEASON.
THIS IS SENDING THE WRONG
MESSAGE AND I FEARED HE WASN'T
GOING TO GET IT.
>> SO WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
THE BROWNS JUST PATIENTLY WAIT
TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS WITH HIM AND
I KNOW RAY FARMER PUT OUT A
STATEMENT SAYING THAT THEY'RE
AWARE OF THIS AND THAT THEY'RE
GOING TO BASICALLY GIVE HIM THE
PRIVACY AND HOPE THAT EVERYBODY
ELSE GIVES HIM THE PRIVACY HE IS
ASKING FOR, MARY KAY.
>> WELL, WHAT HAPPENS NOW IS,
YOU KNOW, EVERYONE HAS TO WAIT
AND SEE HOW JOHNNY EMERGES FROM
THIS.
OF COURSE IT WILL BE A PROCESS.
YOU DON'T COME OUT OF REHAB AND
SUDDENLY EVERYTHING IS FINE FOR
THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
IT WILL TAKE CONTINUOUS WORK FOR
HIM IF HE IS GOING TO, YOU KNOW,
GET WELL AND STAY WELL.
SO I THINK THE BROWNS ARE GOING
TO TAKE A WAIT AND SEE ATTITUDE,
I THINK THEY'RE CAUTIOUSLY
OPTIMISTIC.
I THINK THEY NEEDED THIS TO
HAPPEN IF THEY WERE GOING TO
THINK ABOUT TRYING TO COUNT ON
JOHNNY FOR NEXT SEASON.
SO GOOD FIRST STEP FOR JOHNNY.
AND NOW WHAT THE BROWNS HAVE TO
DO THOUGH IS THEY HAVE TO FIND A
REALLY GOOD PLAN "B" OR MAYBE
EVEN PLAN "A" TO START FOR THEM
AT QUARTERBACK NEXT YEAR IN THE
EVENT IT DOESN'T WORK OUT WITH
JOHNNY.
I THINK THEY WANT TO GIVE HIM
EVERY OPPORTUNITY, BUT THEY NEED
SOMEONE THEY CAN COUNT ON TO WIN
GAMES FOR THEM AND THEY'LL LOOK
AT THE DRAFT AND THE OTHER
TEAMS' ROSTER.
>> WHEN YOU THOUGHT THAT JOHNNY
WAS IN DENIAL, DID YOU AND
OTHERS SUSPECT THAT HE HAD A
PROBLEM, WHETHER IT IS SUBSTANCE
ABUSE OF ANY SORT?
OR JUST THE FACT THAT HE COULD
STILL MAINTAIN HIS SOCIAL LIFE
IN THE MANNER THAT WE HAD SEEN
IT, AND HAD HEARD OF HIS
LEGENDARY STATUS ON COLLEGE
CAMPUS AND WAS IN DENIAL HE
COULD STILL DO THAT AND BE THE
PROFESSIONAL THAT EVERYBODY IN
CLEVELAND HOPES HE CAN BE?
>> YOU KNOW, I LONG SUSPECTED HE
COULD NOT HELP HIMSELF AND
WANTED TO, BUT WAS STRUGGLING
WITH MAKING THE RIGHT DECISIONS.
I DON'T -- I CAN'T SAY FOR SURE
THAT HE'S, YOU KNOW, GOT A
SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROBLEM OR HE'S

ADDICTED.
THAT'S FOR THE PROFESSIONALS TO
SORT OUT, BUT I THINK THOSE
QUOTES TO JOHNNY HIMSELF HAVE
PROBABLY COME TO THE CONCLUSION
THAT HE HAS ENOUGH OF A PROBLEM
THAT IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY
INPATIENT REHAB AND SO, YOU KNOW
WHAT?
I THINK IT'S GREAT THAT JOHNNY
TOOK THIS STEP AND THE THING IS
THOUGH THAT YOU HAVE TO WONDER
ABOUT, NO ONE IS EVER GOING TO
QUIT USING UNTIL THEY ARE REALLY
READY.
SO THE QUESTION IN MY MIND IS,
IS THE FEAR OF NOT BEING A
SUCCESSFUL NFL QUARTERBACK
ENOUGH TO MAKE JOHNNY WANT TO
QUIT?
THAT'S WHERE HE'S AT RIGHT NOW.
THAT'S THE CROSSROADS HE'S AT.
IS THAT GOING TO BE ENOUGH TO
SAY, YOU KNOW WHAT?
THE PARTYING LIFE MEANS LESS TO
ME THAN BEING A SUCCESSFUL NFL
QUARTERBACK.
>> WELL, THERE'S ALSO A VERY
FAMOUS HO -- OHIO FOOTBALL
PLAYER I'M NOT SAYING THAT TO
USE THE BRADY HOKE VERNACULAR,
BUT HE'S WEARING A GOLD JACKET
RIGHT NOW, IN CRIS CARTER WHO
REBOUNDED QUITE WELL FROM
PERSONAL ISSUES EARLY ON IN HIS
CAREER AND COMMENTING ON JOSH
GORDON FROM HIS SEAT ON THE
WORLDWIDE LEADER AS AND DURING
THE SUPER BOWL JOSH GORDON SENT
OUT THIS OPEN LETTER TO HIM,
CHARLES BARKLEY, STEPHEN A.
SAYING YOU DON'T KNOW ME.
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THAT OPEN
LETTER?
>> WELL, SINCE THEN I HAD AN
OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO STEPHEN
A. SMITH AND CRIS CARTER ABOUT
THAT LETTER, AND YOU KNOW WHAT?
I THINK THAT THERE WERE SOME
THINGS IN THAT LETTER THAT WERE
GOOD.
I THINK IT WAS GOOD THAT JOSH
GORDON TOLD PEOPLE A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT WHERE HE CAME FROM AND HOW
HE ENDED UP IN THIS PLACE.
I LIKE THAT.
I LIKE THE FACT THAT HE, YOU
KNOW, FEELS LIKE HE CAN STILL
GET IT TOGETHER AND THAT HIS
FUTURE IS BRIGHT.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE WAS I DIDN'T
LIKE HIM CALLING OUT THOSE GUYS.
I THOUGHT THAT WAS KIND OF -- IT
HAD THIS -- IT WAS SMUG AND I
DON'T THINK HE NEEDS TO DO THAT
RIGHT NOW.
I DON'T THINK THE NFL SHOULD
SUSPEND JOSH INDEFINITELY.
I THINK THE POWERS THAT BE
SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THE
RECENT TRANSGRESSION WAS, AND IF
IT WAS REALLY JUST LIKE HE SAYS,
FOUR DRINKS ON A PLANE, I THINK
THEY SHOULD PUT THEIR HEADS
TOGETHER AND TRY TO FIND A WAY
TO GET JOSH THE HELP THAT HE
NEEDS WITHOUT HIS CAREER
POSSIBLY HAVING TO BE OVER.
I THINK THAT WOULD BE TRAGIC.
>> MARY KAY CABOT OF "THE
CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER" HERE ON
"THE RICH EISEN SHOW."
THEN WE SAW SUPER BOWL XLIX,
LAST NIGHT CHRIS MATTHEWS GOING
CRAZY ON A HUGE STAGE.
MAKING BIG CATCH AFTER BIG
CATCH, CUT BY THE CLEVELAND
BROWNS IN 2011.
DO YOU RECALL THIS CHRIS
MATTHEWS' STINT THERE AT ALL?
DO YOU REMEMBER HIM IN ANY WAY,
SHAPE OR FORM, MARY KAY?
>> YOU KNOW, I DO REMEMBER HIM.
I RECALL HIM BECAUSE HE WAS 6'5"
AND IT'S HARD TO MISS THAT SIZE
OF A RECEIVER AND I DO RECALL
THAT HE DID MAKE SOME PLAYS IN
TRAINING CAMP.
BUT EVEN I CHECKED IN WITH SOME
OF THE GUYS WHO WERE ON THE TEAM
THAT YEAR INCLUDING FORMER
BROWNS TIGHT END EVAN MORA, AND
HE WAS SAYING LIKE IN THE GAME,
BACK THEN IN THAT TRAINING CAMP
HE HIGH POINTED THE BALL REALLY
WELL.
BUT HE SAID HE HAD PROBLEMS WITH
LAZINESS, AND THAT REALLY
BOTHERED THE COACHES.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, I MEAN IT'S
NOT LIKE THEY CUT HIM AND HE
WENT OUT TO -- WENT ON TO GREAT
SUCCESS THAT SEASON SOMEWHERE
ELSE.
IT TOOK HIM A LONG TIME TO GET
BACK INTO THIS LEAGUE.
BUT IT'S JUST ANOTHER ONE OF
THOSE KIND OF SLAP IN THE FACE
THINGS FOR THE BROWNS WHO ARE
STRUGGLING RIGHT NOW AND NEED
GOOD NEWS.
>> I KNOW.
I GUESS TO SUM IT UP, IS THERE A
WAY THAT THE BROWNS COULD
POSSIBLY HAVE A MULTIPLE STRIKE
WIDE RECEIVER AND NOW A FIRST
ROUND DRAFT CHOICE QUARTERBACK
GOING TO REHAB ON THE SAME TEAM
WITH EACH OTHER?
I KNOW THIS IS MAYBE A VERY
BROAD QUESTION NOT KNOWING THE
NUANCES OF WHAT'S GOING ON WITH
THESE TWO PLAYERS, BUT IS THERE
A FUTURE DO YOU THINK POSSIBLY
FOR MANZIEL AND GORDON TO BE THE
ONE-TWO PUNCH THAT EVERYBODY
HOPED COULD BE IN CLEVELAND?
>> I THINK THAT WOULD BE
FANTASTIC IF THEY COULD BOTH GET
IT TOGETHER AND PUT THEIR
PROBLEMS BEHIND THEM.
AND BECOME WHAT EVERYBODY KNOWS
FOR SURE THAT JOSH GORDON CAN BE
ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD AND WHAT
EVERYBODY HOPES THAT JOHNNY
MANZIEL CAN BE.
IF I'M JOSH GORDON RIGHT NOW, I
AM GETTING TOGETHER, YOU KNOW,
WITH MY GROUP OF PEOPLE AND I'M
ACTUALLY BEING WILLING TO GO IN
TO REHAB MYSELF.
IF I'M GORDON I'M CHECKING
MYSELF BACK INTO REHAB WHETHER
IT'S CLIFFSIDE WHERE HE WENT
LAST TIME FOR THE TWO WEEKS
WHICH WASN'T ENOUGH AND I GO
BACK IN THERE FOR AT LEAST 30
DAYS.
BUT I'M THINKING IT WOULD TAKE
MORE LIKE 60 TO REALLY SHOW THE
NFL THAT YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT
THIS.
AND TRY TO WORK IT SOME TYPE OF
AN AGREEMENT WHERE THEY DON'T
KICK YOU OUT OF THE NFL FOR THAT
FULL ENTIRE MINIMUM OF A YEAR.
IF THAT HAPPENS I THINK IT WOULD
BE DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO GET BACK
INTO THE NFL.
LIKE WE HAVE SEEN WITH JOHN --
ALTHOUGH HE'S MAKING A COME BACK
FROM WHAT I'M HEARING.
BUT JOSH, YES, I THINK HE SHOULD
GO INTO A LONG-TERM INPATIENT
REHAB FACILITY AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE.
>> THANKS FOR CALLING.
I APPRECIATE IT.
THANK YOU.
